Roti/Pulka is one the most popular food in India. However, making good Rotis could be a bit tricky and time consuming task. Many times we used to skip the idea of making Rotis due to lack to time and energy.
We decided to try out Rotimakers to see if they can reduce the effort involved in making our favorite Rotis. Tried a few Tortilla makers, the Rotis that came out were no where near our Indian Rotis. Then we ordered Jaipan Rotimaker (Made in India) from Amazon, other brands of Roti makers from India might also work. Initially we did not get good Rotis, however on trying out different types of flours and different ways of mixing the dough, we were able to come up with an ideal method of making great tasting soft, fluffy and healthy Indian Rotis.
We thought of writing this blog to help anyone who wants to know how to make a great tasting Rotis using a Rotimaker. We captured this video of the Rotimaker making awesome Rotis, for those who are interested in making Indian Rotis the easy way. Each Roti would take approximately 2 minutes. The preparation of these Rotis does NOT use oil/butter/ghee, making it a healthier choice.

Making of such a perfect Roti/Pulka using the Rotimaker need to have the right dough mix. Every aspect of the dough making process is important to get to the ideal mix, starting from what type flour to use, how much of flour to use, how much quantity of water to use and how much time to keep the dough idle. We tried several combinations of above mentioned aspects, and below is the final combination that gives the best Rotis from the Rotimaker.
Following is the dough making procedure for approximately 12 Rotis.
Following is the dough making procedure for approximately 12 Rotis.
- 2 cup of whole wheat flour, any brand of flour should be fine. We found flour from Aashirwaad to our liking .
- 1/4 tsp salt
- 1/4 cup whole milk, could use 2% milk if you wish
- 3/4 cup water
Fully mix the above mentioned contents in a bowl. The resulting dough mix should be a bit sticky and loose. Let the dough mix stand for about 4 hours. After 4 hours of idle time, the dough mix is ready to be made into Rotis. Have some water and flour in separate bowls on a side for use while making Rotis.
- Switch on the Rotimaker, till its completely heated.
- With the help of water, make small (lemon sized) round ball of dough, and tap it to make it like a flat patty.
- Rub the flour on both sides of the flat dough patty.
- Place the dough patty on the Rotimaker and press the handle until the dough spreads out evenly.
- Turn over the flattened dough. and keep the Rotimaker upper plate open.
- Check the bottom side of the flattened dough spread until it turns little brownish in color, and then turn it over.
- Wait for a some more time to see the bottom of the flipped turns brown.
- Place the upper plate of the Rotimaker, and see the Roti bulge out.
- Remove the Roti from the Rotimaker and enjoy with your favorite curry.
